Sleep quality degrades. The person may fall asleep but wake in the early hours. Or they may lie awake with a quiet but persistent sense of activation. Or sleep may feel light and unrefreshing even when the duration is adequate.
The pattern reinforces itself. Poor sleep increases the stress load, which maintains the elevated arousal level, which makes sleep harder. The drift compounds.
